On the afternoon of 1 April 2021, 3 magicians from IBM Ring 115 brought fun and cheers to residents of HCA Hospice Care located at 705 Serangoon Road by fooling them with magic performances on this April Fool’s Day.

All the residents there are terminally ill and are not expected to live beyond 12 months. The objective of the Hospital is to make them happy during their stay.

The 3 magicians were Ng Ek Hwang, Henry Tio and Siew Kim Siang. We may not be able to add years to the lives of the patients, but we certainly added much life to their years.

Due to the COVID-19 restrictions, the audience comprised 20 day-patients and 1 supervisory nursing staff. We had to wear masks during our performances. This went down well with our colourful costumes and characters.

Large colourful props were used as many of the patients were old and had poor eyesight. The magic we performed were especially co-ordinated so as to bring out meaningful messages. Chinese lanterns with dancing LED lights reflected light, peace and hope in a world of conflicts, confusion, despair and helplessness. Music, which was used during the performance, was specially chosen so that the audience could relate to familiar tunes that added the correct emotions to the messages.

This April Fool’s Day was special to the residents of this hospice as it brought them much cheer and hope.
