IBM SINGAPORE RING 115 – 65th ANNIVERSARY DINNER

Written by John Teo

Guests arrived at 6.15 pm and were treated to table-hopping magic by Enrico Varella, J K Tan, Derek Lee, Satish Kumar, Jonas Puah, Vincente Tangcueco and John Teo

After the speech by our President John Teo, dinner commenced.  During the dinner, special awards were given out.  Receiving the “35 Years Continuous Membership” award were Charles Choo, Francis Chia, Dr Eric Yap, Peter Awyong, Lim Teck Guan, Ng Seow Kiat, John Teo, Betsy Tan, Ng Yeow Chong and Tan Teck Seng.  Recipients of the “20 Years Continuous Membership” award were Tan Tuan Seng, Francis Bose, Steven Pang, Andy Ng, Philip Peh, Alfred Lim, Tan Kia Sin, Enrico Varella, Sum Jan Chung, Long Chay Kang and Wee Kian Meng.

After the dinner, the tables were moved away and the chairs were rearranged in theatre-style for stage magic.  Willis Lee was the first performer.  He juggled rings and crystal balls.  The “Real Mentalist” Nique Tan was next.  He did a living and dead test with an audience member.  The third performance was a double ventriloquist act by Joseph Then and his “Vulture”, and Shawn Chua and his “Sensational Stefan”.  Alexander Yuen came on stage with his bowling ball from pad and borrowed bill inside kiwi.  Next was Joe Yu who did D’Lite with lighted wand and lights in paper bag.  He closed with Orange, Lemon, Egg and Canary.  The last performer was Aaron Ang who produced parasols and did a linking ring routine.

The MCs for the evening were Satish Kumar and Tommy Chiang who teamed up as “Tenn & Peller”, a parody on “Penn & Teller.”  They ensured the event ran smoothly.

This year, we spent more for the backdrop of the stage as well as the balloon decorations.  They created a special magical ambience for the evening.

It was an evening where everyone enjoyed themselves with food, magic and had a lot of fun.  Every guest received a customised water drinking container by courtesy of our patron Gician Tan.  The lucky ones got to take home prizes from the lucky draw

The success of the 65th Anniversary Dinner is due to the hard work put up by many people, especially the following persons:

  • Tommy Chiang for spear heading the event
  • Betsy Teo for the gifts and planning of the dinner
  • Gician Tan for the door gifts
  • Baharudin for the lights and sound
  • Bernard Sim and Derek Lee for help behind the stage
  • Satish Kumar & Tommy Chiang for MC
  • Pearlyn Tan (Gician’s daughter) for photography
  • The committee members for helping out here and there
  • All performers for table-hopping as well as stage magic (see report on the Anniversary Dinner)
