SINGAPORE RING 115 – July Magic Meeting Report
Saturday, 04 September 2010 21:30

A few coins and a dollar bill or two were all that was needed for this month’s theme of ‘Coin & Money Magic’. Held on 15 July 2010; 37 people congregated at the usual Bay View Hotel, among them were 4 guests.

The meeting commenced with Kenneth Chia updating the members on the forthcoming Singapore Ring 115’s 60th Anniversary Convention.

Ashish Lodhavia then took his induction test. He entertained with a comical card routine involving transposition and card control, and closed with a Rubik Cube prediction without using a physical Rubik Cube.

Chew Liang Huat demonstrated a coin vanish that allowed him to show both hands empty before making the coin reappear.

Alvin Terence was able to predict how many times a spectator could guess correctly the hand that held a borrowed coin. He surprised us all when he correctly reveled the year the coin was minted.

Nique Tan performed an entertaining coin routine with 3 coins that transposed many times to 3 Chinese coins with a hole each. With a burst of fire in his palm, all the 3 coins vanished and in his hand was found a wedding ring.

Tang Sai Thiong did a card effect that had a challenge for the audience as a gag.

Vice President Enrico Varella performed a classic coin matrix routine and proceeded to give us some important tips for performing such a routine.

Before the break, Pambudi Sunarsihanto challenged a spectator not to pick the only odd card from a stack of 5 cards. Needless to say, the spectator failed. He then managed to influence 4 spectators to cut a deck of cards into 4 piles and found the 4 Aces in the process. In his last trick, he did a speed memory test of a shuffled deck of cards.

During the 15 minute break, members fellowshipped with one another and had food and drinks.

After the break, Baharudin performed a series of effects: the “mother of all book test” routine, instant money production from empty hands, and a cute card revelation by both a toy chick as well as a portable small electronic fan.

Tan Eng Huat was next. He teleported a coin from one box to another, transformed 4 cards to 4 totally different cards, did an Ambitious Card routine

and turned scrap papers into real banknote.

John Teo, the President of Ring 115, performed a comedy prediction trick which he wrote in the July issue of the newsletter. John ended with his own presentation of “hopping halves” coin trick.

Recent close-up champions, Alexander Yuan and Wei Liang Lee, performed their individual winning close-up acts, and showed us why they were picked as winners.

Closing the meeting, Tan Teck Seng did a coins matrix routine and a card transposition effect where 4 Queens magically changed into 4 Aces.

NORM BARNHART LECTURES AT SINGAPORE RING 115
Saturday, 04 September 2010 21:07

Norm Barnhart was in Singapore for a gig and we took the opportunity to get him to give us a lecture. Norm is from Minnesota , USA and has been a full time entertainer for over 29 years specializing in comedy, ballons and in kid and family magic.

54 people jam-packed the function room of Bayview Hotel on the evening of 8 July 2010.

It was an evening full of fun and laughter for everyone. When all 60 people laughed, we almost brought the entire ceiling of the room down!

There were 3 segments in Norm’s lecture. Norm commenced with his comedy routines for kid and family shows. These included his version of needle through a smiley balloon, his comedy mind-reading rubber chicken and a comical hot dog trick. They all had fun interactions with the audience and great unexpected magical endings.

He also presented original tricks such as a rainbow (mouth coil) from a sea shell, some funny business with the fun-kin ring, and a routine where baseball and soccer cards were dropped into a hat and the #1 player was found with a huge foam finger – and the birthday child’s photo was discovered as #1!

Norm made a giant rubber spider magically appear from an empty insect book. More amazing than this effect was his method, which could be adapted to cause any object to come out from any book – Norm then showed how he used this to highlight a theme when performing at libraries.

Norm is also experienced in performing close-up magic for corporate banquets and restaurants, as well as strolling magic at festivals. His close-up tricks included a logical and entertaining color changing silk effect and a fast and visual card trick using three kids, picking three cards.  His approach to close up is to present fast and direct tricks due to the distractions that can occur at corporate events, restaurants and festivals.  His idea for stand up and surrounded type magic is to have lots of comedy and fun interspersed. This was evident as we all laughed almost non-stop throughout the lecture, even during his explanations.

Norm is also a quick balloon artist and shared a few of his original magic ideas, including a bare handed inflated balloon from nowhere and a surprising and amazing stacking of acrobatic balancing balloon animals.  For those who do not do balloons he shared an interesting idea using an inflatable penguin that is ideal for birthdays where the child gets to keep the animal object.

In the second segment of his lecture, Norm donned a Charlie Chaplin/ Red Skelton type suit and did his 12 minute silent comedy magic skit about a hobo finding an old suitcase filled with magic. This routine included billiard ball manipulations, a fantastic Zombie ball and fun eggs and rubber chickens production. This hilarious act brought the first part of the lecture to a close.

During the 20 minutes break, participants swamped his table to purchase his tricks and DVDs. All items were sold out and Norm had to take back-orders!

After the interval, we were surprised to see a different person at the front. We thought Norm had brought his brother or his friend along to continue with the remaining part of the lecture. Actually, this was the third segment of his lecture.

Completely transformed to a character known as the Amazing Normondo, Norm gave us his award-winning act that won him the coveted 1st place as America ’s Funniest Magician in Las Vegas . It was not recommended to laugh too hard after food and drinks, but we could not help it. We were in stitches at the bumbling antics of this fall-apart comedy act that featured a proud Las Vegas magician who was having an off-evening.

This was a great way to end the evening, and everyone had to get a photo with the Amazing Normondo, posing in Normondo style! Norm was generous in giving all participants a free 14-page lecture notes. People left the room with big smiles still on their faces!

DR ANTHONY DARKSTONE LECTURES AT SINGAPORE RING 115
Saturday, 04 September 2010 20:58

It was a much anticipated lecture from Dr Anthony Darkstone, a.k.a. Tony Brook, because most of us are familiar with him, having read his weekly column “Tony Brook In Conversation With …” in Alan Watson’s cyber magic magazine “E-Zine”.

We arranged the lecture to coincide with our Ring’s May monthly meeting since it fell on a Saturday.   The event took place on the afternoon of 15 May 2010 where 46 people congregated at a function room in the Bayview Hotel.  Immediately after the lecture, the participants took time for a quick dinner and then stayed back in the evening for the Ring’s May magic gathering where Tony was the guest.

Tony is not only a great magical performer, he also produces and manages many outstanding magic shows in Europe and the United States of America .  His approach to magic is not in creating complicated routines, but in using simple ideas to produce strong commercial magic for the paying audience.

Tony started his lecture with a visual coin bend.  He then talked about the theory of magic.  “Weave the spell, create the magic’ was his favourite phrase for the entire evening.  He taught us how to think “outside-the-box” and gave several applications of the down-under card deal.  He showed us many effects taken from his own performing repertoire.  Included were a ring off string effect, a comedy card revelation using a banana, a coincidence trick inspired by Las Vegas gamblers, his version of the clear force bag, and many others.

During the 20 minutes break, brisk sales were observed at Tony’s dealer table.

After the break, Tony revealed his Pythagoras Force – a simple concept that could force several cards.  He demonstrated many applications of the Force by using it in an amazing poker deal, an interesting card prediction, and to force the four Queens .  Tony completed his lecture with stacked deck effect and a cell-phone prediction.

Participants got a double portion of Dr Anthony Darkstone as they stayed back for the Ring’s May meeting where Tony Brook was the guest of honour.

IBM Singapore Ring 115 - May 2010 Meeting Report
Wednesday, 02 June 2010 20:30
This month’s theme was “Mental and Psychic Magic” and attracted 46 people, among whom were 7 guests.

At the start of the meeting, President John Teo presented visiting magician from USA, Tony Brook our Ring 115 bannerette and 50th anniversary book. Adeline Ng made an announcement on an upcoming event, The Urban Circus on 30 May 2010. Kenneth Chia updated the members on the IBM Mini Convention that would be held on 24 October 2010.

Alvin Terence, the coordinator of the month, gave a quick insight on Mentalism (Mental and Psychic Magic) and demonstrated Clairvoyance. He invited 4 of the guests and handed them his wrist watch to be hidden in one of their pockets. With his back turned away from the audience and his eye closed throughout the entire performance he successfully managed to detect the person holding on to his wrist watch while sensing their thoughts.

President John Teo took as MC for the evening and introduced the various performers.

Nique Tan was the next performer. He confused the crowd and possibly influenced 4 random spectators to pick 4 out of 5 clearly displayed envelopes. They all got a piece of paper each inside the envelopes, while the only envelope left with the performer was shown to contain $100 hard cash inside it. Next, he had 3 different spectators select one card each from different portions of the deck. Each of the 3 selected cards was located by merely spelling to their names. He also did an experiment with Dr Rhine’s ESP cards. He was able to have a precognition of which ESP cards the spectator would place on the table beforehand.

Chew Liang Huat brought along a lie detector bumble bee toy whose nose would light up whenever a lie was told. With the aid of the bumble bee toy, he was able to work his way into discovering a poker card that was freely selected by a spectator.

George Seam demonstrated his telepathic skill using several cards containing pictures of different animals. He was able to divine which spectators selected which animal.

Bosco Francis opened with a couple of bar tricks followed by 2 mind-over-matter stunts. His first stunt involved positioning a spectator to lie between 2 chairs and he, a heavily built person, was able to stand on the lying spectator’s midsection without any visible support there. In the second stunt, he took off his shirt and got several spectators to staple pieces of paper onto various parts of his bare body.

Before the break, Jeremy Pei performed a mental effect in which a spectator freely drew a playing card on a drawing block and the actual card was found folded inside an envelope left on the table all this time. He followed with demonstrations of a coin routine from his latest Ultimate CSB Magic DVD and a dye silk routine with a stripe silk climax ending.

During the 15 minute break, members fellowshipped with one another and purchased magical items from the dealer’s booths set up by Jeremy Pei as well as Tony Brook.

After the break, Tang Sai Thong talked about close-up mats that could easily and economically be obtained from our local stores. He also shared about the possible dangers of performing tricks with borrowed finger rings.

Gordon Li performed an out-of-the-world effect with a borrowed deck of cards. Using only the spectator’s intuition he was able to separate the red cards and black cards from a mixed up deck.

The last performer for the evening was JK Tan. He used a pack of cards and predicted the sum total of several selected cards.
